You're correct...the real intent when I wrote it was to thwart
robo spam, and for that it works well (despite those who claim
captchas are useless).  

Other than a moderated registration scheme, the only way to combat
this problem is to make registration such a chore that spammers won't
bother (like with email verification).  Problem there is that the good
guys sometimes won't bother either.
